Not quite like the gorges we usually imagine….deep fissures in solid rock with raging waters carving even deeper fissures over time. No, but Mossman Gorge National Park is still impressive, especially since it is ably managed by the traditional owners of the land, the Aboriginal people of this area. It’s a striking landscape and we took a tour that gave us more insight into the culture and way of life of the Kuku Yalanji.
A map reference to Mossman Gorge.Terrance was our guide and clearly enjoyed sharing info about his way of life. Here Terrance used Melaleuca tree bark to purify the air for us visitors, as is their tradition.
Various plants produce everything from food to paint to soap.The paint on Joe’s face indicates he comes from the mountains and will have only one wife…whew! Aboriginal men might have many wives and these wives were not allowed to talk to her in-laws.
Mixing a bit of water with this plant produced a soapy disinfectant product.The spindly buttresses that secure these trees fan out in spectacular fashion.This map identifies the boundaries of some 700 Aboriginal tribes in Australia. Some tribes have surprisingly small populations but each tribe has its own language.Example of indigenous art.
Bubbler crabs producing some beautiful patterns are found on many Aus beaches. Looks like another symbiotic relationship between nature and art.
